HEIC HELP · UPDATED SEPTEMBER 29, 2026

How to convert HEIC to JPG

For iPhone photos that will not open in an app or upload to a form. Start with the quick conversion steps, then find help for your device.

Open the HEIC to JPG converter

The quick method: choose, convert, download

  1. Open the HEIC to JPG converter. Selecting more than one photo creates a batch.
  2. Leave JPG selected for normal photo sharing. The suggested quality is 90%; open more options before choosing your photos if you need to change quality, dimensions or a file-size limit.
  3. Choose your HEIC or HEIF files. Conversion starts automatically; keep the page open while it works. A HEIC decoder may need to download on the first conversion.
  4. Open a result to inspect it. Download each completed image, or choose Download ZIP when multiple images have finished.

The original file stays unchanged. Renaming its extension from .heic to .jpg is not a substitute for conversion: the photo data would still be HEIC.

Convert a HEIC photo on iPhone or iPad

Open the converter in your browser and tap Choose HEIC photos. The available picker options depend on your device. Select from your photo library, or browse Files if you already have an exported .heic file. Some sharing and selection paths may provide a converted copy; use a known original when you need to test HEIC decoding specifically.

Try a single photo first. A large batch can use substantial memory, and switching away from the browser may interrupt work. After conversion, use the download button, then check your browser downloads or the Files app. To add the downloaded picture to a photo library, use the sharing options available on your device.

Want future photos in JPEG?

On supported devices, Apple documents Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible for future JPEG captures. This setting does not convert the HEIC photos you already have. See Apple’s format guidance.

Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Save the original photo to a folder you can find. In a recent browser, open the converter and drag the file from that folder into the drop area. The browser workflow does not require installing a separate desktop converter. It tries to decode the file locally and tells you if its HEIC variant is unsupported.

For several photos, select them together and convert the batch. Save the ZIP if you want one download, then extract it before attaching individual images to a form. Check that the receiving service accepts JPG and that each result meets its size and dimension limits.

Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

You can use the same browser steps on a Mac. If you prefer an installed Apple app, Apple also documents opening an HEIF image in Photos or Preview and using File → Export to choose JPEG or PNG. Read Apple’s export instructions.

The browser tool is useful when you want to process several files with the same settings, apply a size target or download a ZIP. Check the output visually when color accuracy, orientation or fine detail matters.

HEIC conversion troubleshooting

What to try when a photo does not convert as expected
What you seeWhat to try
“Could not load the HEIC decoder”Check your internet connection and retry. The decoder code must load even though the photo itself is processed locally.
“Unable to decode this HEIC file”Download the original again and try one file. If it still fails, export a JPEG using an app that can open that original. Renaming the extension will not fix it.
The tab becomes slow or closesUse fewer files, close other heavy tabs or try a device with more memory. Compressed file size does not tell you how much memory the decoded photo will use.
A form still rejects the converted JPGCheck its allowed dimensions and maximum bytes. Use target-size compression if needed; an output marked above target may still be rejected.
The PNG is larger than the originalPNG prioritizes lossless output encoding. Use JPG for ordinary photos unless PNG is specifically required.
The photo looks differentInspect rotation, color and highlights. HEIC HDR, color profiles and decoder behavior can affect the result. Keep the original and compare an export from your device’s photo app.
No preview appears before conversionThe browser may not display HEIC natively. A HEIC placeholder is normal; try conversion to get a preview of the exported image.

HEIC to JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you choose?

If you just want to share a photo or submit an upload form, start with JPG. Choose a different format when your editor or website needs it.

What to keep before deleting an original

A converted still image is a new copy, not an archive of the whole HEIC container. This app does not retain original EXIF location and camera fields, every image in a multi-image file, Live Photo motion or all HDR and color-profile information. Keep your source photos if any of those features matter.

Confirm the downloaded file opens, check its dimensions and view important details at full size. When reprocessing, the tool uses the selected source file again; you can change the settings without manually converting an already converted download.
